Private Yoga for Children and Adults with Disabilities 

Humble Haven Yoga offers one-on-one yoga classes to infants, children, teens, and adults with diverse abilities ranging from autism, ADHD, anxiety, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and developmental disabilities.

  • Benefits of yoga can include enhanced integration between the body and the mind, body and spatial awareness, feelings of ease and relaxation, and increased tone and/or flexibility.

  • All teachers who offer services for individuals with diverse abilities are required to have specialized training hours with Yoga for the Special Child on top of their 200-hour accreditation.

What to Expect

Sessions will be a minimum of 30 minutes and maximum of 45 minutes depending on the student’s needs in each session. Class will include varying aspects of the yoga practice, such as, breathing exercises, mantra meditation, eye exercises to enhance and support focus, physical yoga postures, and deep relaxation.

Our Teachers


Julia Stewart

Julia’s yoga practice began when her brother started bringing her along to classes at Humble Haven while she was studying painting at VCU. When she realized that yoga had provided her with tools to be more present in her own mind and body — which helped her feel more connected to the world around her — Julia sought to learn more about it.

She completed her 200-hour teacher training with HHY in 2021, and in 2023, she began specialized training in teaching yoga to children with diverse needs. When she teaches, Julia pays close attention to her students, giving specific alignment cues to inform practitioners about how they can manipulate sensations in their bodies, and in this way, remain present in their practice.

With a background in figure painting, Julia has always been interested in human bodies, and she will forever be in pursuit of learning more about how they work. She finds great joy in helping others enjoy their own company through the practice of yoga, and believes that this connection with self is essential in building communities that see, support, and value one another.

Suzanne Burns

Suzanne's love for yoga began in 2009 while living and working in Washington, DC. In 2012, after several years of developing a regular practice, Suzanne enrolled in her first yoga teacher training with Down Dog Yoga, a Baptiste Power Yoga affiliate studio located in Georgetown. In 2014 Suzanne had begun to teach several classes in gyms and studios and was actively volunteering with young adults with special needs. In a quest to gain more knowledge and to bring the practice of yoga to differently abled young adults and children, Suzanne studied to become a licensed practitioner of Yoga for the Special Child.

What draws Suzanne to the practice of yoga, and what she continuously shares when leading a class, is yoga's ability to build community through individual empowerment. Suzanne founded Humble Haven Yoga in 2013 while teaching in community spaces, studios, and one-on-one within clients' homes. In 2015, Suzanne decided to return to her hometown of Richmond, VA. With a passion for power yoga and a desire to share it with the Richmond community, Suzanne opened Humble Haven's first brick and mortar location in January 2016.

In addition to building community within the walls of Humble Haven, Suzanne and her team work with local non-profit organizations to bring the empowering, resilient building practices of yoga to adults with diverse needs. When she's not in the front of or on her mat at the studio, you can typically find Suzanne somewhere outside around in Richmond or in her own backyard with her husband Steve and three kids, Holt, June, and Louis.

  • Private yoga sessions for individuals with disabilities are $70/session and sessions range from 30-45 minutes. We offer a first time trial session for $35. All sessions must be paid for at the time of booking. We ask for 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. There is a $35 cancellation fee for any appointments rescheduled or canceled within 24 hours. Some students will acclimate to yoga classes quickly and others may need more time. When a session is scheduled, we are committed to working with students for the entire time; however, if continuing with class seems potentially harmful to the student, space, or instructor, a session may end early. In this case, the full session investment will still be required.
